OMBAC Win Second In A Row, 37-3 Over Unicorns -
Six Tries And Solid Defense Lead To Comfortable Win

(Huntington Beach, CA) 25 January 2003 -- On a warm and sunny Southern California afternoon, the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club made it two in a row as they defeated the Huntington Beach Unicorns 37-3. The win bolted OMBAC above the .500 mark in the Southern California First Division standings, after their opening week loss to Belmont Shore.

The home side got the scoreboard turning early on as an OMBAC penalty led to a successful penalty kick. From then on, however, the visitors claimed all further points. Flyhalf Alistair Steele sold a beautiful dummy to his center Andrew Web to open up a lane for the game’s first try. Steele was injured on the play so the kicking duty was transferred to Dave DiSorbo who added the conversion. DiSorbo added a penalty kick a bit further on and added two more points after a Jason Harper try. Harper’s try culminated in a good individual effort as he broke away from the defense near midfield, then dove on his own grubber kick in the try zone to finish it off. The first half ended with OMBAC up 17-3.

Harper continued his try scoring ways as he added two more Yahtzees in the second spell. DiSorbo added a five pointer to go with the kicks. The forwards didn’t want to be left out of the fun. Ben Oakes finished off a nice sustained forward attack to close out the scoring.

“We had some nice continuity throughout the match,” said OMBAC Manager Mike Tracy. “We put some good phases together and there were a number of players, Dan Payne, Dave DiSorbo and Mark Easbey, in particular, who really put their hand up today.”

OMBAC’s second side had little trouble with the Unicorns seconds, rolling to a 71-0 victory. Rocky Matatumua, Jarrod Faul and Stephen Neville were all impressive in the win.

After dominating time and territory throughout their match, OMBAC’s Division Two side just couldn’t capitalize when the try line was in sight and came out second best 13-5 to San Fernando Valley.  The recycling continued to improve but costly mistakes at the most inopportune times kept OMBAC from finding pay dirt.  Coach Clark Bernales signaled out Sean Lindersmith, James Cross, Greg Sullivan and Jake Lingo for their efforts. Four more players donned the OMBAC jersey for the first time.

This coming Saturday, OMBAC travels north to take on the vastly improved Santa Monica Rugby Club. The Division Two side travels to Riverside for their clash. OMBAC’s first home game of the season is in three weeks time when they host Belmont Shore at the Little Q on Saturday, February 15.
