OMBAC vs Old Puget Sound
Saturday April 30 results

Paddy Mack was the referee on another gorgeous day in San Diego for the match up between OMBAC and OPSB. It was OMBAC's last home game and would determine if they made it into the RSL playoffs or not. There was a large San Diego crowd on hand for both this important RSL match and a SCRFU Division III semifinal match between OMBAC and Pasadena to be played as the curtain raiser.

OMBAC wasted no time setting the tempo and demonstrating their attacking capabilities. OMBAC played with the wind in the first half and after only several phases of play crashed center, Riaan Hamilton, through the Seattle defense for the first try. The conversion attempt was one of only two missed kicks all day by OMBAC flyhalf Matt Alexander. Only a few minutes later OMBAC fullback, Sammy Gonzales, split the centers and found pay dirt, which Alexander wasted no time converting. The next try came from OMBAC winger, Mark Crovelli, which Alexander again converted. OMBAC was now up 19-0. A few seconds later OMBAC's number eight, Henry Schaaf, outran the OPSB defense into the end zone to touch down OMBAC's fourth try. Alexander again converted. After about thirty minutes OMBAC was awarded a penalty, which Alexander slotted for three more points, putting OMBAC on top, 29-0. And, just before half-time OMBAC's other winger, David Burt, sprinted untouched into the in-goal area for five more points. Once again, Alexander converted to end the first half scoring with OMBAC on top 36-0.

The second half was much more of a defensive battle with each team scoring two trys. OPSB scored first through the middle of OMBAC's back line. The Seattle kicker missed the conversion attempt. After another 20 minutes into the second half OPSB ran a similar play and scored under the posts, which they wasted no time converting. However, OMBAC tightened their defense and that was all OPSB were going to score. The OMBAC flanker, Ryan ReBell was the next to score, which David Burt converted. And, OMBAC's fast, powerful number eight, Henry Schaaf, scored his second try and the last try of the day but Burt missed the conversion attempt. The final score OMBAC 48, OPSB 12.

OMBAC stepped up both their intensity and their defense for this big game. Many players played well as OMBAC stole a lot of OPSB lineout ball but Henry Schaaf probably had the greatest impact on the day for OMBAC.
