OMBAC’s 61st ANNUAL OVER-THE-LINE TOURNAMENT
JULY 1, 2014 San Diego, CA (OMBAC) – The City of San Diego, after close collaboration with Old Mission Beach Athletic Club has granted a special event permit that allows for all ages attendance and participation as well as for the public to be able to bring their own alcoholic beverages (BYOB). This event format is the same as the previous 60 years’ Over The Line tournaments.
OMBAC has a close working relationship with city administration and public safety officials that has allowed for very successful OTL tournaments and this collaboration will continue in support of the 61st Over The Line tournament. Additional details of this collaboration and changes promoting fair access to special events will be forthcoming from city officials.
OMBAC encourages the public to come and enjoy the 61st annual Over The Line tournament in a safe and responsible manner. Free shuttles to the tournament are provided by OMBAC. While While BYOB is allowed the public is reminded not to being any glass containers to the Over The Line tournament.
The 61st Annual World Championship Over-The-Line (OTL) Tournament, sponsored by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC), is scheduled once again to take place on the sand of Fiesta Island, in Mission Bay, San Diego. The tournament begins Saturday and Sunday, July 12th and 13th, and concludes the following weekend, July 19th and 20th (both weekends 7:30 AM to dusk). The event offers food, fun, sports, entertainment and more.
OTL is a modified form of beach baseball/softball. Games last three innings, there is no base-running and the primary objective is to hit the ball “over the line,” about 55 feet in front of the batter. This year’s double elimination tournament features more than 1,200 three-person teams competing for trophies awarded in 10 divisions (men and woman, by age). Participant teams have come from as far away as Germany, Japan and Iceland to compete in this one of a kind event. Team names are traditionally creative and good-natured, but can sometimes be quite colorful – often pertaining to current events. Players consist of men and woman in the past ranging from age 18 to 80.
Reserved parking is still available for both weekends of OTL although supply is limited. The “OMLot” is located within a short walking distance of the playing courts. OMBAC also provides complimentary bus transportation (dubbed the “OmShuttle”) to and from the island during the first three days of OTL. They will run from Fiesta Island to the Sun Runner lot on Sea World Drive and from Fiesta Island to the Linda Vista trolley station. Traditional parking fills the island quite early and is usually closed to traffic by 10 AM. For more info about Reserved Parking and Bus Transportation, please go tohttp://54.214.195.60/over_the_
